Back To School Blues: Tips on how to mentally prepare for this school year!
The time is near friends, class is about to be back in session! For those of us that return to school in the next couple of months, we know–time flew by! As we approach heading back to school with students, leadership and staff, remember that you can take control over the year that you have approaching. Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding professions out there, but you have to set boundaries to fully enjoy it. This calling isn’t for the faint of heart, not everyone can do it, but you knew it was yours! Here are some tips to help you ease into the new school year and start with strong boundaries!
1. Remember that this is a new year. Whatever may have happened last school year that may have affected you, take the lessons that you learned and use them for the betterment of yourself. Start fresh with a positive outlook on what this school year can be for you.
2. Intentionally prioritize self. Just like there are teacher work days already preloaded on your calendar, do that same practice with your personal time. No one can prioritize yourself, except yourself. Be proactive and go on your calendar and take an overlook at how your months are looking. Be intentional and try to plan at least one self-care day a month that is on your calendar. You can even schedule a 15-30 minute block for yourself to just breathe, scroll on your favorite app, shop for yourself, or anything else that may bring you a moment of joy!
3. Build community. Especially for our new teacher friends this season, building community between your fellow teacher friends will be very beneficial as this year starts. Befriend those around you who bring you joy and hold you accountable. We need those people in our life, especially those who are in your shoes and can understand that you may be going through the most
4. Set boundaries. You know internally the things that you don’t want to do, or things that you are not comfortable with. Make it a point this year to set clear boundaries within yourself and stick to them, out of respect for yourself. Saying ‘No’ to people may not be easy, but remember that it’ll be better for your own sanity in the long run. And even though ‘No’ is simply enough, here are some other ways to say it.
5. Be kind to yourself. Try not to punish yourself or blame yourself for things that may be out of your control this upcoming school year. Things happen to all of us that we can’t always control. When an avalanche of thoughts run through your mind and anxiety takes over, remember to stay present with yourself. You’re doing your best! We see you, friend! Try these resetting affirmations:
